Mixed urinary incontinence Loss of urine due to sudden urge to urinate and physical exertion

Stress urinary incontinence and Urge urinary incontinence may coexist in about one third of patients, in which case the urinary incontinence is referred to as mixed.

Mixed urinary incontinence thus consists of involuntary loss of urine contained in the bladder, motivated by bladder muscle hypercontractility and also by abdominal muscle exertion.

The existence of one third of patients with bladder muscle hyperactivity incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction inevitably suggests a common mechanism. Multiple explanatory theories correlate pelvic floor weakness with a predisposition to bladder neuromuscular instability.

The therapeutic strategy in this pathology involves acting primarily on the predominant component, the stress or urgency component. After proper control of the most annoying symptoms, remaining symptoms are also addressed.
