Dyspareunia Genital or pelvic pain associated with sexual activity

Dyspareunia is defined as genital or pelvic pain associated with sexual activity, which can be acute and intense and occur before, during or after sexual activity.

It is more common in women than in men, predominantly affecting postmenopausal women.

The causes are multiple, such as infections, inflammation or local trauma, surgical history or local radiation, anatomical changes, endometriosis (in women), Pelvic Pain Syndrome, etc.

The diagnosis is based on an extensive clinical history and a pelvic physical examination. It should be noted that it is often difficult to reach a full diagnosis.

Subsequent exams are directed according to the suspected diagnosis, and may include analytical assessments, imaging exams, among others.

Treatment must be directed to the underlying cause, and may include medical treatment with analgesics, antibiotics, hormonal supplementation, lubricants, hygienic-behavioral measures, pelvic rehabilitation and, in selected cases, surgery.
