Transrectal Prostate Ultrasound Prostate Ultrasound / rectal

The best ultrasound approach of the prostate is performed by transrectal approach, since it allows obtaining high resolution images of the prostate, seminal vesicles and bladder floor, with an anatomical detail much superior to that obtained with the suprapubic approach.

This examination allows the identification of some prostate tumors (not all are visible by imaging), benign prostatic hyperplasia, infections (prostatitis), cysts, dilations of the seminal vesicles, calcifications, among other changes. When necessary, the ultrasound equipment is able to perform a complementary study by echo-Doppler, which makes it possible to obtain information about the dynamics of prostate vascularization.

The examination is performed with the patient lying on the side, with the lower limbs flexed, and consists of the transrectal introduction of an ultrasound probe, designed for this purpose, which acquires images of the prostate through the wall of the rectum.

It is a quick and painless procedure and no intestinal preparation is necessary.

The transrectal prostate ultrasound will always be performed by an Urologist, experienced not only in prostate imaging but also in the medical and surgical treatment of prostate pathologies, which gives him the best sensitivity for the correct interpretation of the exam.
