Training program for self-care of urinary or digestive stoma Stoma care learning and ostomates follow-up

The training program for self-care of the stoma aims to provide patients, as well as their caregivers, with all the necessary information and counseling to adapt the lifestyle of the ostomate to the pos operative reality, as well as with all the preventive tools necessary to ensure a healthy ostomy, minimizing complications.


The program consists of three sessions of Stomatherapy:


First session - Preoperative

- Clarification about anatomical and functional changes associated with the surgery being performed, as well as management of expectations of post-operative quality of life;

- Familiarization with ostomy material;

- Beggining of the stoma self-care training program.


Second session - 1/2 weeks after hospital discharge

- Continuation of the stoma self-care training program;

- Selection and evaluation of ostomy material; samples from different manufacturers are tested in order to define the ideal material, suitable for the person and the respective ostomy;

- Providing care for stoma and peristomal skin;

- Treatment of complications, if applicable.


Third session - 3/4 weeks after hospital discharge

- Continuation of the stoma self-care training program;

- Providing care for stoma and peristomal skin;

- Treatment of complications, if applicable.


This program may be complemented with additional sessions, if the need arises.


The training program will always be taught by a nurse sub-specialized in stomatherapy.
