Flexible Urethrocystoscopy Endoscopy to the bladder and urethra
Urethrocystoscopy is the endoscopic urological examination performed to evaluate the internal anatomy of the lower urinary tract (urethra, prostate, and bladder). The use of modern flexible cystoscopes (thin-gauge endoscopes) allows a minimally invasive examination, well tolerated by the patient and with high quality endoscopic images.
It is indicated in patients with urinary symptoms (blood in the urine, difficulty in urinating, increased voiding frequency, pelvic pain or repetitive urinary tract infections) and upon suspicion of having pathology of the low urinary tract, especially in cases where first-line image testing was not sufficient to obtain a full diagnosis. It can be performed for post-operative evaluation of surgeries of the urethra, prostate, bladder or ureter, or for minimally invasive endoscopic therapies.
It allows the identification and characterization of urethral tightenings, neoplasias, urinary calculi and diverticula, among other pathologies, as well as performing biopsies of the bladder and urethra.
The procedure does not require fasting or prior preparation, and there is no need to change or suspend any medication taken by the patient. Antibiotic prophylaxis is not mandatory and is recommended only in specific situations which are identified in a timely manner by your Physician.
This is a procedure performed on an outpatient basis, and there is usually no need for any restriction on usual activities. Ingestion of large amounts of fluids is recommended in the days following the procedute to reduce the possibility of blood in the urine or urinary tract infections.
The use of local anesthesia (anesthesia gel in the urethra) and modern flexible cystoscopes allows a painless examination, with only a slight disconfort, similar to the urge to urinate.
The examination is performed in the lying position and with the lower limbs flexed and upported in specific supports, with disposable clothing provided by the Clinic and in facilities that ensure the patient's total privacy.
On average, the entire procedure is 25 minutes long.
A Cystoscopy will always be performed by an experienced Urologist in the diagnosis and treatment of urethral, prostate and bladder pathologies, with the support of a Nurse specialized in urological techniques.
